HOW DID YOU MEET YOUR PARTNER?
A fateful, very drunken night more than 10 years ago at The Rochester Hotel (or better known as “The Rochey”). While on the d-floor, I noticed that some ‘jerk’ was spilling beer all over my shoes. I turn around and stuck my phone in this person’s face to tell them off about my beer soaked shoes. That person was Kim and his charm swooned me and here we now are.
HOW DID THE PROPOSAL GO DOWN?
We were in Barcelona battling extreme jet-lag and climbing a hill in Park Guell. Kim suggested we sit down on a private park bench (which was very welcomed by me as it was very hot and a strenuous walk).
After he nervously proceeded to search his bum bag for 5 minutes, I slowly caught on to what was happening and as soon as he pulled the ring out, I started crying for the next 20 minutes. It was also the city that his parents were engaged in which was extremely sweet (although they got engaged in a ‘dingy hotel’ so I am glad Kim didn’t go to the extent to fully replicate his dad’s proposal).
HOW WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE WEDDING DRESS SHOPPING?
So smooth! I had only visited one other ‘big name’ shop before arriving at Riva bridal. As soon as I stepped into the Riva studio though I knew I was going to get my dress from there. I felt so comfortable and not rushed at all. I was encouraged to try on as many dresses as I wanted and it was such a nice private fitting experience which I didn’t have at the other shop I had visited. Kim was super patient and made the experience really relaxed and enjoyable.
HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR GOWN WAS THE ONE?
I already had a very strong feeling I would be getting my dress from Riva having viewed some of the dresses online beforehand. I knew I wanted a modern yet simple silhouette and definitely wanted sleeves. Being made in Melbourne was also an added bonus as I love shopping local!
I tried on a few of the dresses at Riva and absolutely fell in love with my dress as soon as I tried it on. I couldn’t stop thinking about it and went back the following week to try it on one more time and bought it that day. I wanted a dress that felt like me and Kim’s dresses were it for me!
WHAT WAS YOUR WEDDING STYLE AND INSPIRATION BEHIND IT?
We really wanted something modern, colourful aesthetics and for everyone to have fun. It is a party after all!
We left some traditions in but threw quite a lot out the window to suit what felt like ‘us’. I took some inspiration from friends weddings I really enjoyed. I also did lots of Instagram/pinterest research particularly looking at past weddings at our venue to see the various ways that the space could come alive.
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE MOMENT FROM YOUR WEDDING?
I loved our photoshoot with our photographer, Juliette. It really was the calm before the storm and she made us feel so relaxed. We did some photos at The Rochey where we met and had a drink with her. Took a relaxing walk for more portraits through Fitzroy and ended up at Piccolina for an ice-cream photoshoot. Really, it was more or less what we love to do on the weekends! Just add a wedding dress, suit and photographer.
WHAT WAS YOUR WEDDING SOUNDTRACK?
We had a real mix of songs that we’ve always loved and thought would also be crowd favourites. I walked down the aisle to So Into You by Tamia which is a song we both absolutely love.
We had a lot of chilled songs during cocktail hour to set the mood and then had our amazing DJs amp it up on the d-floor with old school party songs. We couldn’t be happier with our DJs, My Best Friend’s Wedding DJs. They stepped in for us with a week’s notice when our previous DJ plans fell through and we were in a panic. They were absolutely amazing and so professional and I would recommend them to anyone who will listen!
WHAT ARE YOUR WORDS OF WISDOM FOR OTHER BRIDES?
Checklists and spreadsheets are your best friend for keeping you on track. It’s super overwhelming at first but having it all written down really calms the chaos. We also found that as a couple, the best way for us to make decisions and get on top of things was setting aside time in our busy calendars during the week to focus on certain tasks. And just remember it’s your day. You’ll get so much unsolicited advice - some of it helpful, some of it not. There’s no right way to do things and at the end of the day, you should do you and pick the things that will make you most happy/that you will cherish about your day!
